AKB48’s 2012 Request Hour was live broadcast, and I had a choice; I could either start watching at 1AM, or go to bed. I told my friend, “Nah, I’ll just sleep. They’ll probably just lip sync all their songs, and I’ll just be mad anyway. I’m more interested in the results than watching them perform.”
They decided to bitch slap me by having an actual band performance. Completely live. Including instruments.
They sure showed me.
When I watched it though, the actual performance was pretty weak. Some people had trouble singing and playing instruments at the same time, with the instruments drowning out the voices. Takamina missed notes on her drum solo. Sometimes Yukirin would speed up on the drums too much.
But you know what?
It was awesome.
It was awesome because for 5-6 months they worked on learning their instrument from scratch.
It was awesome because no one ever expected it. Especially me, the biggest doubter ever, who is always mad when I watch a concert and see them lip sync. They must’ve been working on it long before even KazeFu, on top of all their work, and they had to do it in secret.
It was awesome because of the atmosphere. It really feels like a bunch of friends were sitting around and thought, “Hey, let’s totally come up with a song from scratch, that’d be cool.” And they went out and performed it, in front of thousands of fans who could not expect it in the least.
It’s also awesome because Takamina plays lead guitar, a fitting role. It’s about damn time they make her look like the captain.
Sometimes, when I like a song, it’s not about the lyrics, or the people singing, or even the actual song itself.
Sometimes, it’s just about the memories, or the things it inspires.
That’s why I love this song.
