Except Michael Jordan, who has the legendary flu game.
Anyway, today we get to see them make traditional Osakan pickled vegetables. Doesn’t sound very exciting…. but I’m excited! I never understood why they had so many pickled vegetables in Japan until I actually started eating it. It’s like… not just a palate refresher but it’s also kinda salty and it’s a good contrast when everything is some sort of Soy Sauce/Mirin/Sake based recipe. So yes, for some reason, I have a personal vested interest in this episode, as funny as that sounds. Our hosts today are Nana, Milky, and Momoka.
Today’s vegetable is the Shitennouji turnip. I’ve been to Shitennouji once, when I got lost in Osaka. I didn’t see any turnips though.
Supposedly this turnip has 4 times the vitamins and minerals of today’s vegetables, but who knows, he might be lying. That sounds too good to be true.
The pickling process begins with washing the vegetables in nearly freezing water.Milky gets lazy and washes it half-assed before the owner comes down and says “Do it properly or I’ll get pissed off.” Except not in those words and not with that attitude. Momoka loses the will to live.
They then proceed to cut the vegetables. You know, I used to think vegetable cutting was just whatever. Then when I tried katsuramaki on a daikon (cutting a daikon into thin sheets with a circular cut) and I put 3 deep cuts in my thumb. Now it kinda makes me cringe when I see people cut. And what do you know…
Well, good thing she had that glove. They then proceed to throw all the vegetables into a vat, pour some salt on it, and then place a lid with a heavy stone on it.
One day later, the vegetables are all done, the ladies deliver it to the store and they make onigiri that looks super delicious. I know, it’s Japanese TV, everything seems to taste really good, but this actually does really look good and I don’t say that often about vegetables.
Our lecture ends with the store owner telling the young folks to continue spreading the good news about traditional vegetables. Yeah, I don’t think that’s gonna happen. Well, I hope it happens, even though I won’t get to eat those vegetables here.
There’s something funny about Milky’s talking ability. It’s kinda tennen, but it’s kinda not. It seems awkward, but at the end it doesn’t seem so at all. It’s a bit adorable, but it’s also a bit tennen. I’ve been going along with it for now because sometimes it’s funny but I really can’t place it. It’s really… unique, to say the least. With that said, the difference in ability between NMB48 and the rest of the Oha Asahi crew is really obvious and sometimes awkward. Sometimes I like that awkwardness, especially Nana who always trips up on our words, but sometimes I do wish they’d be better. Ahhhh well.
