One of the Team 4 girls I gravitated towards was Yamauchi Suzuran, AKA Ranran, because she’s good at golf. She’s kinda cute too, but like, everyone is kinda cute so it was all about those crazy golf skills. She seemed like a nice serious girl. In an earlier Nemousu episode they showed her trying to get a high score because she said she wanted to be the best celebrity golfer, and she messed up pretty bad and it was kinda sad seeing her in tears because she said something and she couldn’t back it up.
Her appearance on Bimyo showed that she also had comedy skills, so she quickly became one of my favorites of Team 4.
This new episode features Ranran trying to improve her driver skills, and she seems so much different than before. It’s like she took her comedic timing into her golfing so now it seems more like a joke. It’s a little disappointing. She gets a coach to teach her some techniques to improve her drive. But not just any coach, the women’s champion of golf drives. I remember with Sae and her attempt to go pro at bowling, they had her train for weeks to refine her technique. She failed and it was pretty sad to see because she was totally outclassed. But hey, she worked pretty hard and she was able to beat the host, Ogi.
However, this time, they’re only giving Ranran one day of practice. What the hell?
Yes, 40 yards on your drive in one day. The producers must’ve had some high expectations.Whereas old Ranran seemed more serious, new Ranran seems bent on giving good, silly, funny reactions. Yea, I miss the old serious Ranran. Her reactions are good for TV, but… it doesn’t feel as honest. I dunno. Maybe I’m just making stuff up.
After a series of exercises to get her pumped up, she gets a new driver and off we go.We’re joined by Shiichan as our caddy! So she hits and she hits… She even hits a ball into one of the golf carts! But she’s having trouble matching her own record, let alone topping it by 40 yards. So she starts talking to her club, saying things like “Let’s work hard together! Ganbarimashou!” and the teacher says “Stop screwing around!” I wonder if old Ranran would do this. Maybe not.
To cheer Ranran up, Oya does some gymnastics.
And that’s actually the end of the episode. We’ll see the thrilling conclusion next episode, which has us seeing tears and disappointment. I guess that’s expected though… I mean, really, one day of practice?
