I’m usually very critical of AKB concerts, primarily because they lip synch. I mean, how can you go to a concert to see them LIVE and you get a lip synch concert? Certainly, some top performers have done it before, like Michael Jackson. But Michael Jackson is freakin’ Michael Jackson, and there is no reason at all, ever, to doubt his skills.
With that said, this last episode of AKBingo is something I’ve been anticipating for a very long time, not just for AKBingo but for AKB as a whole.
A singing battle. There’s a lot of good girls in there, some I was curious about (Suuchan), some that are clearly top tier (Yuka, Wasamin), and some that are mysterious because they’re so new (Suzuran, Komariko, Miyu). I was excited just looking at the lineup!
The first battle was Suzuran vs. Suuchan. Super.
I’m aware of Suzuran’s golfing talents and comic talents but I wondered how good she was at singing. Her lipsynching was alright, at least. On the other hand, Suuchan has been an enigma to me. She seems like she’d be good but I’ve never really heard her sing at all.Suuchan’s always been like the princess character but seeing her grow up she looks like she’s gonna be a pretty ballin’ woman. I think it’s time for her to cast aside the Suumelody image.
Oh yeah, the singing. Suzuran was good but shaky at some spots, whereas Suuchan looked like she was too nervous or didn’t practice at all. Curiously one of the guys said that while Suzuran won, if he were a producer he would pick Suuchan for potential. That’s kind of a jerk move. “I voted for you now, but my heart wasn’t really into it.”
Suzuran’s intro was something like “Her dad really loves her singing.” At the end she was like “Thank you Papa!” Yeah, I think she’ll get owned in later rounds…
Following them was Komariko and Myao. I’ve never heard Komariko. Myao, on the other hand, I like her singing. I think she’s got a ton of potential there, she just needs to develop it.Komariko though, was very good. A little bit of a rocky start, but she killed it out there. She picked an Ikimonogakari song, and somehow she managed to make it her own instead of being like a copy. (Wow, I sound like a lame American Idol judge…)
Myao was… too nervous. I agree with the commentator; we didn’t get to see her true strength. The song she picked, though, was pretty difficult. And she showed flashes of greatness, but there were too many missed things. I was disappointed to see her not move on.
We come to the last round for today, Yuka and Haachan.Yuka is clearly top tier. Haachan, I think, is kinda borderline, she’s shown she can handle it and can sing well. You really had to feel bad for Haachan, getting matched up against a powerhouse like her. I think she could beaten any of the four in the previous matches. Amazing voice. The part where she sang “Nani mo kamo” was disgustingly good and gave me goosebumps. The judge’s criticism was interesting; he was saying that while her skill was good, she didn’t do a good job conveying the message of the song. On second though, I’m kinda glad that Haachan went next. If, say, Suzuran went up next, she would be destroyed so hard that it would be sad to watch. At least Haachan gives us a great and fun performance. After a shaky 3 seconds and a missed lyric, she nailed everything perfectly. And she even did the funny little dance that I remember from the GTO J-Drama. Like, man, if it wasn’t for Yuka…
She attended one of the judge’s school’s in the past and has obviously improved. They were suggesting songs that would’ve been better for her to do. It’s kinda heartbreaking for Haachan.
I’m definitely looking forward to next week’s episode. Wasamin is the expected heavy hitter, and she’ll probably slaughter lemon. I’m interested in how Amina and Shiichan perform, I feel like they’re bad but maybe we just haven’t seen their true potential. Oh, and Miyu dares to challenge Utada’s “Can you keep a Secret?” and I think she just might pull it off. I don’t know anything about Harukyan. Maybe she Harukyan’t. Hahaha ha ha… er… sorry.
