I’m usually averse to watching AKB48 concerts because they’re all lipsynched, they perform the same dances that we all know, and there’s always a bunch of shocking announcements that everyone hates. I didn’t watch this one live but I picked up the footage later.
Here’s some of the highlights (and lowlights), I thought. I didn’t watch all of it; there’s a lot of songs I don’t really like.1 – Give Me Five!
I like how they’re playing instruments live, but you’d expect a group that’s been singing and performing for 6 years to be good at the singing part already. It’s kind of embarrassing how that’s the worst instrument of the group, everyone’s voice.2 – Team B Oshi
Team B Oshi, I think, is like the hypest song ever. It’s silly and goofy and yet surprisingly individualistic and representative of the entire identity of the team. And it’s super high energy, gets the crowd involved and everything. This is one song that I can actually tolerate being lip-synched, if only because it’s so silly. The SSA version was fun. I do miss Nacchan though. And while Shihori’s cool and all, the audio editing to put her part in sounds really awful. They should really fix that to match it up with everyone else.3 – Junjou U-19
NMB48 is solid as ever. While I like Jou, her dancing is kinda funny but she said she’s never really done any of that prior to NMB48. Kinda looks weird compared to how sharp everyone else is.4 – Lost the Way
DiVA looks super solid. This performance was the best of the night. There was lipsynching, yeah, but still, the dance formation they did was slightly different from their usual one, and the dance is complex enough to where lipsynching is forgivable. On top of that, not only was it complex, but it was done well by everyone. Including the backup dancers. Yuka especially killed it.5 – MC/Heavy Rotation
Ultraman tie-in… but it was rad just to hear an unpracticed Heavy Rotation by DiVA.6 – End Roll
Suzuran proved she can dance. She is really, really good. Shades of Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice winning Dancing with the Stars. Athletes just do it better. Yukirin looked pretty hot out there but Suzuran burned up the dance floor and won over this performance.7 – Kuchi Utsushi no Chocolate
I always liked this song because it was pretty passionate and dirty but they talk about how kissing is better than sex so it’s not that dirty, I guess.
This version with Mariko, Miichan, and Akicha was pretty bad. Mariko just cannot sing.8 – Naminori Kakigoori
I loved this song when it first came out. Lives were fun too because you get to see Yuuko do Tekken’s Lili’s db+4. But, I dunno, looking at it now, it’s not really quality. I know they were called Not Yet because they were Not that good Yet, but… I was hoping they’d be better by now. Well, we’ll see. Also Yuuko’s charisma just steals the show.9 – Dear J
I feel like every time Itano steps on stage she looks and performs much better than she did. Realistically her voice is not that good and she has trouble singing but I love how she busts her ass to improve all the time. She had shades of BoA in this performance, maybe because she’s a fan of BoA. Unfortunately BoA was still much better when she was 15. (And honestly, that’s the only time I liked her. It was okay back then because I was also 17!)10 – Seishun no Lap time
I don’t understand why this is such a popular song for NMB. Still, I like the new outfits and the choreography is decent.
I’ve already covered the major announcements in other (both angry and happy) blog entries, so I guess this’ll be it for this concert until the DVDs come out.
