With the Janken tournament they previewed the next AKB48 single, UZA.
That word kinda means something like “annoying,” and when they UZA UZA UZA UZA UZA UZA UZA it is kinda annoying.
It also calls to mind Mattan’s Naniwa Nadeshiko intro, with his favorite author Dazai and how his partner is Uzai. Heh.The tune is kinda electropoppy. (I almost wrote poopy.) And it’s a bit of an interesting tune. For me, I’ve always liked AKB48’s fall singles, because they fall into the kakkoii (cool) category, which is closer to my original interests in music around rap. I’m no music guy and I listen to mainstream so before you jump on me and be like “Yo you don’t know what real hip hop is,” well, whatever. Really.
So with fall incoming we tend to get these more interesting songs. River, Beginner, Kazeha, and now UZA, and I’m really liking it. I had forgotten to review Gingham Check and those tracks had some pretty interesting songs as well. The song is supposed to be a dual center of Yuuko and Jurina. I’m not a fan of Jurina because she’s not AKB48, she’s SKE48. She’s a cool cat and all, but it’s like… yo, AKS, get some intergroup rivalry going. Now, with that said, I’m liking Yuuko more and more lately. She seems to be more aglow ever since the election. And with me and my “rebellious” views on idols, to me she seems so anti-idol, so independent and free and badass. And she also kicks ass at dancing and her dramas have all been really good. It’s kinda hard for me to like her because she’s so popular, but as a celebrity in general I think she’s awesome. A lot of criticism of this song has been leveraged towards the backdancers and the use of autotune. As far as autotune, I mean, they lip synch all their concerts. I don’t see how autotune changes anything because they hardly ever sang live to begin with, lol.
I first thought the backdancers, AKA “Beat Buddy Boi” were unnecessary, mainly because there’s already 16 freakin’ people on stage. Why add any more? Furthermore, they didn’t serve any real function or have any chemistry with the song, and I thought their routine was sub par. I didn’t know why they were there.
So I don’t know, it was kinda weird that they did such a weak routine. Or maybe the camera work was bad. Or maybe they weren’t allowed to upstage AKB48.
But it was pretty sick because we got to see Miichan, Takamina, Yuuko, and Yamamoto Sayaka get down with that crew.I remember Miichan saying she was taking hip hop lessons since she was 5 or something, Yamamoto and Yuuko have always been good, and surprisingly Takamina can dance as well. Very cool to see and I’d really want to see more of this kinda stuff.
And then after that dance interlude, Jurina comes back to center. O…kay.
I’d definitely like to see a cleaner version of this being performed but overall I really like it. I’m not so sure it’s a good listenable song but it makes for something cool to watch.
