Yeah, I understand. Momokuro has nothing to do with the 48 franchise. In fact, they’re actually rivals. AKB48 is marketed as “idols you can meet,” so what Momokuro did one time was to pull up right in front of theater and say, “Why wait to meet your idols at handshake events when you can meet Momokuro right now?”
I actually discovered them while watching an episode of Hey! Hey! Hey! which featured NMB48, SKE48, and SDN48. They performed Densetsu no Z. And I was thinking the entire time… are these girls serious? This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen!
But it’s their ridiculousness that draws the fans in.
Their new single came out recently and it is amazing.
Marty Friedman on the guitar, a choir, crazy tempo changes… as far as music, this is actually really progressive. It’s kinda weird saying that, since AKB48 is so formulaic, hence the same damn MIXing in every song. It’s just incredible and a very good change compared to what I’m used to listening to.
I’m not gonna go and abandon the 48s for Momokuro though. They’re great, but honestly adding them to the degree I follow the 48 girls would probably overload my teenage girl quota for my life. I’d totally go to one of their concerts though.
With a new NMB single being announced, I’m hoping for something more progressive like this as well. Junjou U-19 was pretty sick and most of the B-side tracks were really good, I hope for them to continue that trend.
